Adequate Yearly Progress

Trish Viniard, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, reported to the Board that after months of waiting, the official Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) information has finally been received for the 2006 ISAT Reading and Math assessments for grade 3 –8. Results for each school and subgroup were presented.  All subgroups met AYP! The results are cause for celebration and they validate the incredible thought, energy and effort staff and administrators have put forth on behalf of the students!   All eight elementary schools, as well as Baldwin and Junior High, increased student achievement in Reading and/or Math, and many of those increases were significant.  A special congratulations to the staff of Baldwin and Junior High:  In their disaggregated data, several subgroups made impressive gains!

Yes, Virginia, Yellow is a Christmas color

Each year for the past five years, employees of the Quincy Public Schools Transportation Department have conducted their Make A Merry Christmas project.

District 172 is an economically diverse district and bus drivers see it all.  It was this concept that led bus driver training manager Dan Bartelt and driver Jony Shaw to a discussion of what drivers and other transportation department employees could do to help some district families enjoy a merrier holiday season.

As co-chairs of the project, Bartelt and Shaw solicited good quality items of clothing, toys, household goods and non-perishable food items from co-workers.  The items were collected, wrapped and delivered in a big yellow school bus to carefully selected families.  Principals and teachers help identify the families.  Last year, garage sales were sponsored in May and September with the proceeds going to the Make A Merry Christmas project. Many employees donated money to the cause as well.

Bartelt admits, “Many times there are tears, but mostly there is laughter, smiles, and joy.”

Thank you to the QHS MUSIC STUDENTS AND STAFF for the Vespers Concert which truly reflected the spirit of the season.

In other action, the Board approved:

· Revised Safety and Risk Management Plan

· Agreement with Energy Education
