SCHOOL NURSES RECOGNIZED

Healthy students learn better.  Public Relations Director Christie Dickens recognized Nurse Supervisor  Jean Martin and nursing staff at the Board meeting last night.  She stated that the school nurses are vitally important to student and staff every day.    The duties of school nurses have changed dramatically over the years.  They don’t just take temperatures, administer medication and apply band aids.  Their duties include infectious disease control and prevention, case management of asthma and food allergies, immunization compliance, state mandates and documentation, and parent visits.  Nurses also wipe tears, give pats and hugs, and help mend broken hearts.   School nurses are also very mindful of the wellness of staff.   The Board thanked the nurses for their hard work, dedication and service to the district.

National School Nurse Day Is  May 9.

COLLABORATIVE ACADEMY FOR TEACHER TRAINING

Dr. Ann Behrens, retired QPS administrator and professor at Quincy University and Tom Conley, teacher at QHS, presented information at last night’s Board meeting on the Collaborative Academy for Teacher Training (CATT) program.  QU received the Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant in 2004 to fund the program. Collaborative partners include Quincy University, Quincy Public Schools, John Wood Community College and parochial schools.  Participating schools include Berrian, Dewey, Washington, Baldwin, QJHS, QHS, and Quincy Notre Dame.

Teacher candidates in QU’s education program meet for class in the schools. Part of the class time is spent interacting with students and classroom teachers.  The candidates tutor and mentor students, teach the class or small groups, and learn to give assessments.  Mr. Conley stated that the hands-on experiences these teacher candidates are receiving is invaluable. QPS teachers benefit by having additional adults in the classroom to provide individual help to students.  Also, veteran teachers are exposed to the latest teaching practices.

Dr. Behrens stated that CATT is becoming the QU School of Education model. It is transforming how teachers are prepared to work. However, grant funding ends in two years. Quincy Public Schools and QU need to begin to develop a plan to sustain this partnership.
